FAQ

Can you guarantee fluency by the end of your course?
No, and I would be very wary of those that guarantee fluency.  Here is the reason, learning an entire language is not something that happens overnight.  I mean, I still don’t know everything about my first language, much less a second.  Fluency is acquired over years of training in a foreign language and/or environment experience.  Many say that dreaming in a foreign language is a true sign of fluency.  I’m pretty sure no one can guarantee that.
Do I get feedback from the teacher?
On our Basic program, no.  However, our Deluxe program does have individualized feedback through assignments.  You receive grades based on your performance and comments from me.

Also, you can reach out to me at any time if you have any specific questions.

What technology requirements are there for your course?

You can take our course on a computer, a tablet, or a phone.  To complete our speaking activities, I recommend using a laptop or desktop with microphone capabilities (most are built-in).  I also recommend that you use Google Chrome as a web browser.  Some of our speaking activities may not work on other devices or web browsers.

Each lesson does comes with a downloadable worksheet that you can print to work on.

What sets you apart from other online courses or apps?

If you look online for courses or apps that can teach you Spanish, you will find a couple of things.  You will find huge companies that teach many languages, but that are not focused or specialized in any single language.  Most of these companies, along with most apps, do not go beyond much of the basicsThey may not teach any grammar at all.  I am trying to build a program that can teach Spanish to those that want to really learn beyond a few travel phrases (although, that’s good too!).  The second thing that you will find is a bunch of Skype sessions that you can buy from native speakers in random countries.  Most of these teachers do not have any certifications at all and have no idea how to actually teach an English-speaker Spanish.

With me you get a certified teacher that cares on the other side of that email or assignment.  Someone that knows exactly what it is like to learn Spanish as a native English-speaker.  Someone that has been implementing engaging and interactive curriculum in the classroom for years with success and just wants to share all of that with you now.

You will also find our program is fun!   You will find the video lessons entertaining because I love to joke around and be silly!

What if I don't like the course?
If you are not satisfied with our course within 7 days of purchase, we will issue you a full refund.  No questions asked.

Does my course expire?

Yes, our Semester Courses conclude one year after you begin and you have two years to complete a Year Course.  However, all worksheets are downloadable for you to keep.  You may also keep up with any extra links or resources that I provide throughout the course.

Can I work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, just type in www.santiagospanish.com on your web browser and log in to access the course!  However, I do recommend using Google Chrome and a laptop/desktop as some of the speaking activities may not work on other browsers/devices.

What makes you qualified to teach Spanish?

I am a current Certified Spanish Teacher by the state of Texas and have been teaching Spanish since 2014.  I am certified to teach Early Childhood -12th Grade.  I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor with a major in Spanish and a minor in Pedagogy.  I not only studied the language, but the method of teaching.  I have spent several months in Spanish-speaking countries/environments such as Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Spain, Mexico, and Costa Rica.  I have experience doing live interpretation from Spanish to English and I have even translated a book from English to Spanish.

Do you have live sessions or tutorials?

No, currently we do not have any live sessions or one-on-one tutorials available.  However, this is something that we are looking to add in the future!

We do currently have Tutorial Mini Courses.  These courses are to help you brush up on specific topics.  Most of the topics are covered in our semester courses.

What is your philosophy on grammar?
My philosophy is that learning is active.  You cannot learn if you do not use the language through writing, speaking, reading, and listening.  However, grammar is an important aspect of knowing the why behind those things.  I use grammar as a support to performance-based learning.
Are you a native speaker?
No, and I am uniquely capable to teach English-speakers the Spanish language.  I only knew a few fun phrases in Spanish until I went to high school.  That is where I began to fall in love with the language.  As I was finishing up college, I went back home to observe my old Spanish teacher.  I confided in her that I wished I was a native speaker.  She said, “Why?  You learned the language yourself.  Who better to teach it?”  That has stuck with me through the years and I have used that to help English-speakers learn Spanish in ways that only a native English-speaker could do.
